Dr. Lihang Ying (President)

Dr. Lihang Ying is the president of AlbertaAI. He has over 15 years of professional experience in software engineering, entrepreneurship, AI, and enterprise architecture in China and Canada. He works at the City of Edmonton as an architect in Smart City and AI & ML. He is also a mentor in the Multimedia Research Centre at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Fangfang Ding (VP Events)

Fangfang Ding has received her Ph.D. degree in Engineering Management at the University of Alberta, MSc in Quality System Engineering and BS in Computer Science. Her research expertise focuses on reliability analysis and optimization, prognostics, condition monitoring, maintenance optimization and renewable energy systems, among which AI techniques are commonly explored and deployed. 

She is very active in the communities and volunteers at various activities. Currently, she also acts as the president of the Edmonton Hubei Association. 

Fangfang is very enthusiastic about promoting modern technology to the communities at each corner that she is able to reach out.

Dr. Yanyu Zhou (VP Partnership & External)

Yanyu earned her Ph. D in international education policy and leadership from the University of Maryland in the U.S.A and her master’s degree in culture and values in education from McGill University in Canada. She also got her graduate diploma in Ethics and her bachelor’s degree in political science in China. Currently, Yanyu is working for a charitable organization in Edmonton in charge of the Adult Literacy and Skills Development Program. Prior to this position, she was Associate Director for an Institute at Pace University in New York and the Principal for a Chinese School with a history of over 100 years, in Boston. In addition, she was a faculty member in two universities in China before arriving in Canada.

Dr. Zhou has a passion for working for communities. She is President of the Edmonton Chinese Writing Club as well as Vice President of Edmonton Intercultural Centre. As a scholar, Dr. Yanyu Zhou was an Associate in Research of Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Harvard University. She is the author of a book, numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations in a broad range of fields.

Jade Miao (Treasurer and VP Finance)

Jade Miao volunteers as Treasurer at Alberta Artificial Intelligence Association, where Jade oversees the organization’s financial operations, including preparing treasurer’s report, financial analysis, and budgets.

Jade is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified General Accountant and a Senior Accountant at a full-service accounting firm in Edmonton. Jade graduates with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is now completing her MBA degree at University of Alberta.

Mehwish Abbasi (VP Communication & Membership)

Mehwish Abbasi is a Computer Instructor at Action for Healthy Communities. She joined Alberta AI as a board member and VP of Communication and Membership in 2020. She has a Masters in Computer Science from McMaster University, ON and a Bachelors in Mathematics from the University of Karachi, Pakistan. She was awarded the President of Pakistan Award for Academic Excellence. She has vast experience of teaching at the university/ college level. Currently, she is pursuing MicroMasters in Data Science from the University of California, San Diego.

Calvin Lim (VP Marketing)

(Insurance Broker / International Speaker / Innovator / Entrepreneur)

Calvin started his career as a technical engineer and worked his way up as Greater China Regional Country Manager for a UK publicly traded technology company. He has been well-traveled and worked in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Singapore before settling in Canada. He has been on the speaker panel of IIR (Institute for International Research) presenting on the value-added service application aspect of telecommunication devices.

He founded his insurance brokerage last decade and growth across Western Canada. Using his background expertise in telecommunication, information technology, and passion for Artificial Intelligence, he started UW InsureTech to solve technical problems for his insurance brokerage.

Calvin has been nominated by the Insurance Business of Canada award as the broker of the year 2018 / 2019 and innovative broker of the year 2019. The company was awarded North America Innovate Broker the year 2019 in Chicago, IL USA by Nexus Insurance Award (now Reuter Event Award)

His insurance brokerage utilized AI technology with Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning on categorizing clients’ data.

He is also a past Lions, a serving member of Mensa Canada, Riverview Rotary Club, the president of non-profit organizations WCCIPA (Western Canadian Chinese Insurance Professional Association) and is serving as VP of marketing for Alberta AI. 

Mrs. Rola Chehayeb (Secretary)

Rola Chehayeb earned diplomas in Early Childhood Development, Child Psychology, and Medical Office Assistant and earned the prestigious Stephen Francis Scholarship Award. Besides serving on the Preschool Association Board, she had a supervisory role through Grant MacEwan University for student’s practicums. 

Having a passion for community development, she decided to work with people and communities. She has been actively involved in the non-profit sector by providing services as a Board member with Alberta Childcare Appeal Panel, FCSS, Tofield PLC, Edmonton Intercultural Centre and Alberta AI Association. 

She is appointed as a Commissioner for Oaths and is on her second term.  In 2016, she started working for Action for Healthy Communities in the settlement & Integration program and now is a Coordinator for Community Development. She received the 2019 Janet Hughes Award from Edmonton’s Food Bank and she was chosen as one of the top ten Arab women in Alberta and top 50 women in North America who made a difference in the community. Rola is a strong believer of diversity and inclusion.

C.H. William Cheung completed a Juris Doctor Degree at the University of Alberta in 1986, a Master of Philosophy at the University of York in the United Kingdom in 1976, and a Bachelor of Social Sciences  Degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1969. He can read, write and speak fluent English and Chinese with a good command of spoken Mandarin, Cantonese and the Shandong dialects. 

He has a career background in social work, real estate sales, and over 30 years in legal practice with Shtabsky & Tussman LLP, Parlee McLaws LLP, and Dentons Canada LLP. His legal practice covered realestate transactions, immigration, corporations, commercial transactions, international trade, and matters related to estate and will. He is a life-member of the Law Society of Alberta and a Notary Public of Alberta for life. He has served on the Alumni Council, the Board of Governors and the Senate of the University of Alberta for an aggregated number

Mr. Bob Hiew

Bob Hiew is a seasoned business development professional with a proven ability to: develop and foster partnerships and relationships to achieve common goals; develop and implement strategic and business plans for both public and private sector companies.

Bob was Vice President of marketing and sales with Betterhealth Global and General Manager of WiBand Communications.  He was Director of Business Development for companies such as Videotron Communications, Pangaea Systems and KBT Systems.  Today, Bob is Vice President of Business Development with Data Management Association of Edmonton.  

Bob has a degree in business administration and an electrical engineering diploma.  He is also a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Governance Essentials Program for Directors of Not-For-Profit Organizations.

Chenqiu Zhao, PhD Candidate, University of Alberta

Chenqiu Zhao received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in software engineering from Chongqing University, Chongqing, China, in 2014 and 2017, respectively. He used to be a Research Associate with the Institute for Media Innovation from 2017 to 2018, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore . He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in Multimedia Research Center, Department of Computing Science in the University of Alberta. His current research interests include computer vision, video segmentation, pattern recognition, and deep learning.

Chris Chen, Lead Data Scientist, Competition Master at Kaggle

Chris Chen received his degree in Computer Science in 2001 at Chongqing University of Posts & Telecom. He is a Lead Data Scientist with extensive experience in leading Advanced Analytics projects in Telecom and Oil & Gas industry. He is a Competition Master at Kaggle, the largest and most influencing data science competition platform, and has ranked top 1% globally. Chris is a lifetime learner, the chief family cheerleader, and an untalented yet persistent cook.

Leyuan Yu, NLP Data Scientist, Manulife

Leyuan specializes in solving industrial NLP challenges, from problem define to solution delivery. Leyuan currently works at Manulife Advanced Analytics team as an NLP Data Scientist, prior to that he worked at Deloitte OmniaAI as a Data Scientist and various companies as a software developer for years.


Tian Liang, PhD, Simulation Specialist, RTDS 

Tian Liang (S’16, M’20) received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, in 2011. He received the M.Eng. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2014. He received his Ph.D. degree in Energy System at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 2020. He is working as a simulation specialist in RTDS technology, the world’s benchmark company for real-time power system simulation.  His research interests include real-time emulation of power systems, power electronics, artificial intelligence, fault detection and isolation, and System-on-Chip.

Xian Chen, PhD, VP & CTO, Zhejiang WalkGIS

Xian Chen received the B.Eng. degree and M.Sc. degree in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China. He received a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta, Canada, in 2010. His research focused on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Clouding Computing and Software Engineering, etc. He has worked as a senior manager in information technology enterprises since 2011 and accumulated rich experience in the industry. He is currently focusing on GIS-based solutions in Smart City and Natural Resource Management.

Xinli Cai, Fire Weather Research Analyst, Natural Resources Canada

Xinli Cai is a Fire Weather Research Analyst at Natural Resources Canada. Her domain expertise is wildfire prediction, with a strong understanding of statistical analyses and machine learning. Her recent projects are around spatial wildfire danger mapping, predicting extreme fire weather events with deep learning, and downscaling precipitation with deep super-resolution. Currently, she is also finishing up her second MSc in Computer Science at the University of Alberta. Outside of work, Xinli co-founded the Google Developer’s Group (GDG) Cloud Edmonton, one of the fastest-growing developers’ communities in Alberta. She is looking forward to meeting more interesting people and to building the Alberta Developers’ community together!

Xinyao Sun, PhD Candidate, University of Alberta

Xinyao Sun received BASc degree in Computing Science from the University of Alberta and got Master degree at UofA with a Specialization in Multimedia. He is working toward a Ph.D. degree in UofA, and his research interests mainly include computer vision, signal processing, machine learning and blockchain technology. His main focus now is using signal decomposition techniques to improve the remote sensing processing pipeline using Synthetic Aperature Radar (SAR) for wide-area monitoring of earth from space.

Yongzhe Hong, MD, MSc, PhD, Data Analyst

Dr. Hong provides consultation on the design and analysis of clinical studies to the members of

Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Alberta. He has more than 7 years of experience dealing with large population-based health data.  Dr. Hong applied a variety of statistical methods for primary and observational studies, including descriptive analysis, survival analysis, time series analysis, longitudinal analysis, and risk adjustment and modelling. He is currently a member of the Biomedical AnaLytics Studio And Methods unit (BALSAM). His research interests include Causal inference and AI in Healthcare.

Yuxi Li, PhD, CEO, Attain.ai

Yuxi Li, author of the 150 pages Deep Reinforcement Learning: An Overview, with around 500 citations, ​at https://bit.ly/2AidXm1​, and is writing a book about reinforcement learning applications. He is the lead guest editor for a Machine Learning Special Issue, lead co-chairs for an ICML 2019 Workshop and a 2020 virtual workshop, all on reinforcement learning for real life. He was a co-organizer for AI Frontiers Conference in Silicon Valley in 2017 and 2018. ​He has published refereed papers at venues such as NIPS, AISTATS, and INFOCOM. ​He obtained the Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Alberta and was a postdoc there.  He serves as TPC Members/reviewers for conferences and journals, like AAAI 2019-2021, PLOS ONE and TKDD. He was an associate professor in China and a senior data scientist in the US. He founded attain.ai.

Sister Association: East China Immigrants Society of Edmonton


East China Immigrants Society of Edmonton (ECISE) is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization in Edmonton. The members mainly came from  Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and their friends. It was established in 2005.
